2017 lesson: Dealing with betrayal

Hey 👋🏾 there BCU Family!

Typically, you have the option of listening to our podcast, reading the notes or both. For this post, because of the conversational story, please tune into the podcast recording and refer to the written post for the highlights and corresponding Scriptures. We pray the post blesses and encourages you.  If so, please thumbs up AND leave a comment! Thank you and enjoy the post!

As many of us reflect back on 2017, I like to document what the Lord has taught me and share those lessons with all of you. This podcast reflects on a situation where I was betrayed and hurt by people whom I loved and trusted. And yes, with God’s grace, I STILL love them.

Podcast highlights:

  • Who are we REALLY putting our trust in?
  • Our flesh and/or the enemy is really behind any and all discord, as he hates unity.
  • Our flesh is designed to fail.
  • We should not put people on a level that is equal to God.
  • Offenses will come..and ANYONE we come in contact with is subject to offending us.
  • Hurt and anger are natural, normal emotions to being offended, yet we are responsible for how we react toward the persons. (Matthew 18 is an awesome Scripture reference).

Scripture references

v5 Thus saith the Lord; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the Lord.

v6 For he shall be like the heath in the desert, and shall not see when good cometh; but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land and not inhabited.

v7 Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is.

v8 For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.
(Jeremiah 17:5-8).

Woe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh! (Matthew 18:7).

So, BCU Fam, this was a TOUGH lesson to go through, you hear me? When you get hurt by people who are close to you, it cuts much worse than when a stranger does. How do we react with the persons after the incident? Stay tuned for the part 2 of this post for what the Word of God tells us to do.

Have you ever been betrayed or hurt by a co-worker, spouse, friend or family member? How did you handle it? There’s a comment section here on the BCU site, just ripe for us to continue our conversation!

  1. I’ve been hurt more than once! Too many times to count. To be honest I’m not sure if I ever really dealt with it. Often I just feel hopeless and except it just how my life is.

    1. My beloved reader,

Thank you for your candid comment–and I understand how you feel. Being wounded over and over is tough–especially from our co-workers, family, friends and in some cases, even our church family. Because the Scriptures (Matthew 18), tell us that offenses will come and we are to love and forgive like Jesus does to us, you are right, the hurt is a part of our lives. This is when we are to take our pain straight to Jesus and ask Him to heal us from the inside out and give us the heart to forgive those who wronged us.

While NO ONE likes being hurt, oftentimes, God is testing us in this area to help us to realize we need to go to Him with our anger, hurt or disappointment rather than retreat, withdraw, blame or self-medicate with food, sleep, excess spending, etc., (ask me how I know about that 😶).

With God’s instruction, I have found that if the same test is happening over and over and I am handling it the same way, and getting the same result, then I need to change how I am handling it. It’s not easy, now and I messed up a lot in doing that, but God is faithful to help us as we ask.

Now–there is hope! Since you mentioned you think haven’t really dealt with it, I encourage you to deal with it today—right now if you can. Otherwise that hurt can manifest itself in your spiritual, emotional, mental or even physical health. God is not interested in His people withering because people (through the enemy), choose to inflict pain on others. We know Jesus and He is ALL powerful and wants us to be victorious! GLORAYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!

Beloved, as painful as it is, as wrong as the people were, and far back as it goes, and often as it happened, give the people and that they said, did, or neglected to do all over to Jesus. And give it to Him in full–instead of going back to check on it or pick it up later. Ask Him in faith (you just need a little bit), that as you choose to hand over the hurt, that He replace that hurt with hope, and love for the offenders, so much so that your mind forgets the details of what happened. And if the enemy tries to use these individuals/situations to hurt you, again (and that test will come), that God’s love will cocoon you to the point where the enemy’s antics won’t bother you at all.

I’d love for us to stay connected so that we can hear all about your victory report!!! You can always contact me here, or on FB or Twitter, @BlenCouragesU), as well as emailing me: Blen@BlenCouragesU.com. God bless you and I’m yet praying for you. Can’t wait to hear back!

  3. Wow, this is deep and so meaningful. Certainly a message a lot of us needed to hear! When I think of how Christ handled things, when He was betrayed multiple times, it grips my heart. Many times, I think we try to forgive people who hurt us by our own strength, but it is only by the power of God that we can even respond the RIGHT way to offenses. Praise God for obeying the Spirit’s will in presenting these words to us at this time. God bless. 🙂

    1. Hey there my friend! Happy 2018!
Glory to God for the message and for your insight on the impossibility on forgiving people in our own strength—you are SO right! If we don’t yield the offense to God and ask Him to help us forgive, it will not get done. If it wasn’t for Jesus, I’d STILL be holding grudges from 19XXXXXX! 😀 I am so grateful to Him for making me more like Him, even if it is a struggle sometimes!

God bless you for stopping by! You blessed my heart!

  4. […] Last time we were together, we talked through a situation where I was betrayed and hurt by people whom I loved and trusted—and more importantly the lessons that the Lord taught me through what happened. A central theme of the podcast, is forgiveness from the heart. This, BCU Fam is one of the HARDEST things to do, especially with repeat offenders and those who have really hurt us badly. Yet, we need to forgive with the help of the Lord.  Listen in to part 1 of this 2 part series and and find out why. […]
