A Friend’s Betrayal: Lessons in Serving Love

  • This time of year, many Christians are especially remembering the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ our Savior.
  • As we recall the events leading up to the death of Jesus, it’s important we examine how He treated people, including Judas.

17 Now the first day of the feast of unleavened bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the passover?

18 And he said, Go into the city to such a man, and say unto him, The Master saith, My time is at hand; I will keep the passover at thy house with my disciples.

19 And the disciples did as Jesus had appointed them; and they made ready the passover.

20 Now when the even was come, he sat down with the twelve.

21 And as they did eat, he said, Verily I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.

22 And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to say unto him, Lord, is it I?

23 And he answered and said, He that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray me.

24 The Son of man goeth as it is written of him: but woe unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! it had been good for that man if he had not been born.

25 Then Judas, which betrayed him, answered and said, Master, is it I? He said unto him, Thou hast said.

26 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body.

27 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it;

28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

29 But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.

30 And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.

47 And while he yet spake, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and elders of the people.

48 Now he that betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he: hold him fast.

49 And forthwith he came to Jesus, and said, Hail, master; and kissed him.

50 And Jesus said unto him, Friend, wherefore art thou come? Then came they, and laid hands on Jesus and took him.

What I marvel at, BCUFam is this:

Jesus knew Judas.

Jesus chose Judas.

Jesus served Judas——all while knowing that Judas would betray Him. That’s love.

And even when Judas delivered Him to the chief priests and elders, Jesus still called Him friend. Not in a snarky, sarcastic way, He meant it. That must have moved Judas, along with watching Jesus being brought to Pilate, because the Scriptures say he realized he betrayed an innocent man. After he confessed, Judas threw the money down and hung himself (Matthew 27:1-5).

BCUFam, as trying as it is sometimes, we are commanded to walk out Matthew 5:43-48 in all our challenging interactions. If Jesus in the flesh continued to love, bless, do good, pray for and serve the man who would betray Him, how much more should we be doing? It’s a challenge, yes, but we can do all things through Christ that strengthens us. Amen? Amen!

Father, in the name of Jesus, we thank You for this lesson and reminder. As we go through this life, we know offenses will come, and along with those offenses, the opportunities and inclination to retaliate. Please strengthen us to continue to love, bless, do good and pray for those who have offended, hurt, or betrayed us, according to Your instruction, so You will be honored, and we will be called Your children. We thank You for continuing to bless and keep us, and we will give You all the praise and glory, in Jesus Name, we pray, Amen!

Biblical Confrontation: Navigating Offenses According to God’s Word

  • Confrontation is biblical—but it has to be done according to God’s directions.
  • The Lord presented me with a situation where I had to have a difficult conversation with a person of authority.

BCUFam, it’s important for us to follow God’s directions when it comes to offenses. What I am seeing among some of the people of God is speculation, accusations, and cancellations—-before a conversation is had with the accused. Unaddressed offenses often turn into bitterness, anger, wrath, clamor and evil speaking against the offender. While we do not minimize the hurt the person caused (which is why we go to them in the first place), the Word also says to be kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you (See Ephesians 4:31-32). When God puts it that way, it’s time to let these offenses GO! Amen? Amen! Let’s pray!

Father, in the name of Jesus, as always, we thank You for what You have spoken to our hearts. Jesus, please help us to prayerfully examine our hearts for any bitterness, lack of forgiveness, anger or distance in between us and the people in our lives. We pray that hurt feelings, broken hearts and tattered relationships will be healed, and that you will help us to forgive others like You have forgiven us.

Help us to approach anyone we need to according to the directions You have outlined, without fear or worry about the outcome. If our brother/sister chooses to receive us and be reconciled, we thank You, Jesus and if they do not, we STILL say thank You, Jesus knowing we followed Your will and way, and we can stand before You in peace.

Going forward, Jesus, we ask that You help us to manage all the relationships and interactions we have with people so that You are honored and glorified! It is in the name of Jesus Christ, we pray, and thank You, Amen!

Word study: “Liberty”

  • When studying the Bible, it’s important to get an understanding of the original text (Hebrew|Old Testament or Greek|New Testament).

  • One definition of “liberty” in the Greek is —“aphesis”, meaning release from bondage or imprisonment. forgiveness or pardon, of sins (letting them go as if they had never been committed), remission of the penalty. It can also mean power, license or authority.

31 And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.

When we love God with all of us, and love people like ourselves, we have kept all the commandments.

BCUFam, it is a blessing to walk in the liberty Christ gives us. The freedom we have does not give us the license to do whatever we want–that mindset leads us back into the bondage of sin. Rather, because of Jesus, we are free to do what was impossible before He filled us with the Holy Ghost—and that is to live independent from sin.

Sure, we will struggle in some areas, or mess up along the way, and if we do, we can repent, ask for God’s forgiveness, and walk in the freedom of His forgiveness. That means we will not allow people to hold us hostage to what God forgave us for, AND going forward with God’s help, we do not continue practicing sin. Amen? Amen! Let’s pray!

Father, in the Name of Jesus, we come before You with a thankful heart for the liberty you have given us! Thank You for freeing us from the bondage of sin, and helping us to walk independent from sin, and dependent on You to help us follow Your Word to the letter, so we are pleasing in Your sight, we are good witnesses of the transformational power of the Holy Ghost, and, so we can see You in peace, hearing the words “well done, thou good and faithful servant.” We give you all the glory and honor for giving us the privilege of representing You in all our interactions, in Jesus name, we pray and thank You, Amen!

Independence, trust & trauma

  • Independence is an encouraged and prized trait in our culture—–especially for women.
  • Books, songs, and movies tout the fact that women do not need anyone at all——they can do everything on their own.
  • Admittedly, shifts in society, lack of resources, unforeseen circumstances, and sometimes our choices make it where women have to hold things together alone.
  • While some independence is needed AND a wonderful thing, too much of it is actually unhealed trauma manifesting itself in our relationships, or lack of them.*
  • Jesus knows all about what happened, and wants to and can heal us from the trauma and bless us to trust again.

The Lord will sort things out, if we let Him in.

BCU Fam, many of us, myself included, have been on the receiving end of trauma and it can/does break your heart and spirit. For others, we may now realize we were the trauma causers. Or, perhaps, we continue in the “spirit of ultra-independence” (rooted in pride), and leave Jesus out of our circumstances——–and then things really become messy. Whatever the situation, there is an Answer! Jesus is available and is offering us help only He can give. He wants forgive us, heal us, redirect us, and make us whole. Let’s pray about it.

Father, in the name of Jesus, as we come before you, we thank You that Your presence is Here. We pray for those who have been on the receiving end of trauma, those who are going through trauma now, and those who have been through trauma and are unsure what to do. We pray now in the Name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, that You will speak to broken hearts and spirits everywhere, Lord! Please touch someone, even now, where they are, in Your healing Name, Jesus——speak to their heart, and please mend it and put them back together again! Please speak to the minds of Your people and help them to forgive the person(s) who caused the trauma. Bless all who are listening, who this post and prayer is for, to hear Your voice, to feel Your Spirit, and to be renewed in both heart and mind. We thank You that the trauma will no longer identify them, that they will no longer live in hurt, guilt and shame, but that they rise up in the Name of Jesus with a renewed heart, mind and spirit. Bless us to be able to deal with people according to how you would, with Your help, Jesus.

No more, will we walk around with in independence saying we do not need anyone——-rather we thank You for the people you put in our lives to undergird and support us. Bless us to know how far to take our relationships, what to do, and what to say, who to keep in our lives, and who to let go of, so that You are glorified, honored and praised. Remember and forgive those who have caused the trauma. If we were the perpetrators, help us to acknowledge what we’ve done, apologize where we need to, and not to repeat the same patterns again. Please forgive us for walking in independence and leaning to our own understanding. Bless us to remember we can depend you on You, Jesus, to help us make the right decisions. Ahhh, we thank You, Lord for making and keeping us whole in the Name of Jesus!

As the tears flow for some of us, we thank You comfort, strength, mercy and restoring relationships today! We thank you healing and delivering and we bless Your Holy name! Thank You for coming to speak to our hearts and minds and we will continue to give Your name the praise, glory and honor that belongs to You, as we live our lives out loud for and through You, Jesus! In Your name, we pray. Amen!

Psalm 103 (and a little more).

  • While some refer to the Psalms as “chapters” or “divisions”, The Psalms are actually arranged in five books.
  • Today’s focus is from Psalm 103 (book 4) We’ll look at verses 1-12.
  • Main theme: This Psalm tells us the many ways God cares for us.

Book One——Psalms 1-41

  • David is the author
  • God is usually referred to as “The Lord”.
  • Key verse: The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want (Psalm 23:1).

Book Two——-Psalms 42-72

  • Eighteen psalms are penned by David and the remainder by Korah and his descendants.
  • The Lord is mostly referred to as “God”.
  • Key verse: The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise (Psalm 51:17).

Book 3———–Psalms 73-89

  • Mostly written by Asaph and Korah and his descendants.
  • The Lord is mostly referred to as “God”.
  • Key verse: Turn us again, O God, and cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved (Psalm 80:3).

Book 4———–Psalms 90-106

Book 5————Psalms 107-150

  • Fifteen Psalms name David as the author.
  • These psalms are mostly for worship and praise and God is usually referred to as “The Lord”.
  • Key verse: They that trust in the Lord shall be as mount Zion, which cannot be removed, but abideth for ever (Psalm 125:1).

Psalms 103:1-12

1 Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless His holy name.

2 Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits:

3 Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; Who healeth all thy diseases;

4 Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; Who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies;

5 Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

6 The Lord executeth righteousness and judgment for all that are oppressed.

7 He made known his ways unto Moses, His acts unto the children of Israel.

8 The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy.

BCU Fam, when we read through this Psalm, it really does tell us how much the Lord loves us! I am so grateful for all He does for us, especially His redemption and assurance of forgiveness——thank you, Jesus!!! My intent was to read this Psalm in it’s entirety, but the Lord gave me so much good background information, I just had to share with you all! Lord will, we will finish up the next time we are together. In the meantime, let’s pray!

Father, in the name of Jesus, we thank You for this exposition and closer look at Your Word. We thank You for this Psalm reminding us for the benefits You give us and we are so thankful for them! We want to thank You for crowning us with lovingkindness and tender mercies. Thank You, Jesus for satisfying our mouths with good things, for forgiving us for our transgressions, and we especially thank You for the privilege for being able to bless Your Holy name! Help us to remember this Word as we go through the day and to apply it so You will be glorified, honored and lifted up in our lives. Thank You for this time together and for all You do, in Jesus name we bless You, Amen!
