The Essential Role of Salt in Our Lives

Hey there BCU Family!

I was honored to teach on the subject of salt years ago, last month, and I had a very special request (Hi Lydia and Mark!♥️💙), for an encore of “salt talk” just this week! For this three-part series, you will have the option of listening to our podcast (click here, or the BCU avatar below to listen), or, if you are short on time, reading the basic notes below, or you can do BOTH! In any case, we pray the podcast blesses you. If so, please thumbs up or leave a comment! Thank you and enjoy your study!

Podcast highlights:

  • For years, salt have been told to lower or not to consume salt. On the contrary, God designed us to need salt in our lives.
  • In today’s conversation, we will take a look at the history of salt and why it is essential to have in our diets and in our daily interactions with people.

A while back, the Lord blessed me teach on salt at a conference, and I thought I’d share a condensed version of what He gave me with all of you. In Matthew 5:13, Jesus said, “ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.

Why salt? Let’s start by taking a look at the history of salt and why we need it in our natural bodies and in The Body of Christ.

Salt comes from the ocean, and the salt water is usually channeled into smaller, shallow pools of water. The wind and sun evaporate the water and as the salt crystallizes, it is, in some cases, hand-harvested by sauniers. Depending on the type of salt being harvested, this labor-intensive process can sometimes take up to five years to complete!

The Latin word for salt is salarium,  meaning ‘pertaining to salt’, but also is where our word “salary” comes from.  History tells us salt was a precious, expensive, highly valued item of trade and sometime used for monetary exchange. In fact, some sources say Roman soldiers were even paid in salt! That may sound strange now, but back then when salt was your salary, you were living LARGE!  Now that you have some background, let’s take a look at why we need salt.

Salt gets a bad rap in part, because our diets have changed to include more processed, fatty and preserved food that has lots of table salt. Table salt is not all bad, just not as good as natural sea salt is. Pure sea salt has minerals like sulphate, magnesium, calcium, potassium, bicarbonate, bromide, borate, strontium, and fluoride—–the body needs micro-nutrients to function. While table salt originally comes from sea salt, in its processing, those minerals are stripped away and iodine added in. (Side note: Speaking as a researcher, and not a trained and licensed medical professional, rather than consuming processed table salt, I suggest getting the sea salt and eat more wild-caught fish and certain veggies for iodine). 😉

Pure sea salt is needed in your body because it:

–Prevents muscle cramps
–Provides essential nutrients
–Enhances nutrient absorption

Pure sea salt also regulates:
–Blood pressure (in conjunction with water)
–Blood sugar
–Sleep

This is just a fraction of what this needed nutrient does for us!! In essence, salt regulates your body, helps you function and keeps a lot of the “bad” out. Now let’s look at the spiritual need for salt.

Salt regulates the body of Christ by keeping the bad out:

Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like, which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God (Galatians 5:19-21 NKJV).

It also keeps us functioning by keeping the good in like love, joy, peace, long suffering, gentleness, goodness, temperance, faith and meekness (Galatians 5:22). With the salt Jesus gives you on the inside, it shows up on the outside!

As a needed spiritual nutrient, Jesus commanded that we “have salt in yourselves and peace with one another” (Mark 9:50). In our next installment, we’ll take a look at what that means and why salt is vital in friendships and covenants, Amen? Please stay tuned!

So what are your thoughts on our topic-du-jour? Did you know that salt was so vital to your body? How awesome is it that God made it so we need salt for regulating our spiritual lives as well? Isn’t God amazing? Please head to the comments section below and let’s chat some more!

Blessings in Communication: Avoiding Talebearing

Hey there BCU Fam!

We are so glad you are here! You can access the podcast here, or click on the avatar below, as you refer to the show notes below for the highlights. We pray the rebroadcast blesses and encourages you. If so, please thumbs up AND leave a comment! Thank you and enjoy the podcast!

Podcast highlights:

  • While communication is often defined as how well we speak, it is also how we communicate about others to others.
  • When growing up, gossip or “talebearing”, backbiting, and slander was a normal part of conversations, even among some of the people of God.
  • Years ago, the Lord delivered me from these ungodly habits, but there was an instance where I felt “obligated” to share new information I received.

KJV Scripture References

The north wind driveth away rain: so doth an angry countenance a backbiting tongue (Proverbs 23:25).

A froward man soweth strife: and a whisperer separateth chief friends (Proverbs 16:28).

Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out, so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth(Proverbs 26:20).

In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths (Proverbs 3:6)

The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly (Proverbs 26:22).

Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers (Ephesians 4:29).

Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man (Colossians 4:6).

Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God (James 1:19-20).

BCUFam, that urge to share was SUPER STRONG, but God was STRONGER! Thank You, Lord! And had I gone forward in what I “knew”, the results would have been catastrophic! I am learning that when we do things God’s way, we get His results—-which are always perfect. Amen? Amen! Let’s pray!

Father in the name of Jesus, as we come before You today, we thank and praise You for the revelation and/or reminder as to what our speech should entail. We ask You, Jesus, to help us to hear Your voice as we communicate with one another about one another, so that what we say will be non-corrupt, full of grace, seasoned with salt, and edifying to the hearer. With Your help, Lord, we also want the words of our mouths and the meditations of our hearts to be acceptable in Your sight, Jesus.Thank You for delivering us from the strong hold of corrupt communication and giving us more love in our hearts and prayers and sweet words on our lips for the people who are made in Your image. We bless Your name for helping us to represent You in our speech, in Jesus Name, we pray, Amen!

Lessons from a Flight Incident: Pride v. Humility

Hey 👋🏾 there BCU Family!

This podcast is a much-needed revisit and reminder that I am so amped to share with you! Because of the informal format, please tune into the podcast recording (click here or on the BCU avatar below) and refer to the written post for the highlights. We pray the post blesses and encourages you. If so, please thumbs up AND leave a comment! Thank you and enjoy the post!

Podcast Highlights:

  • As a frequent flier, I am very accustomed to the rules relating to carry-ons and such.
  • Years ago, on a flight, I was settling in when a flight attendant gave me a hard time, and made me stow my perfectly legal carry-on——-that had my purse and SNACKS in it!
  • As I fumed, I pled my case with the Lord because I know I was right and she was wrong!
  • Listen in to see how what the Lord did on my behalf.

KJV Scripture References:

Woe unto the world because of offences! For it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence comes! (Matthew 18:7).

For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body (James 3:2).

When pride comes then comes shame: but with the lowly is wisdom (Proverbs 11:2).

Only by pride comes contention: but with the well advised is wisdom (Proverbs 13:10).

So, BCU Fam, when I first pleaded my case with the Lord, I was NOT expecting that answer LOLOL! I give God glory, though, for His correction. It is so much better if we get the lesson right on this side of Heaven, than to see Jesus after we leave here and have to depart from Him for deliberate and willful disobedience. And in doing what the Lord said, I am grateful for how things turned out. When we do things God’s way, we get His results, which are always perfect. Amen? Amen!

Becoming a First Responder in Prayer

Hey there BCU Fam!

Because of the informal format, please tune into the podcast recording (click here or on the BCU avatar below) and refer to the written post for the highlights. We pray the post blesses and encourages you. If so, please thumbs up AND leave a comment! Thank you and enjoy the post!

Podcast highlights:

  • BCUFam, we are continuing our unofficial series on lessons learned from last year.
  • When we hear the term “first responders”, we think of the amazing Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT’s), paramedics, police officers, and fire-fighters that we thank God for.
  • First responders specialize in quickly and skillfully attending to emergency situations.
  • The Lord has been talking to me about being a better first responder when it comes to people and prayer.

KJV Scripture references

Ecclesiastes 5:4-5

When thou vowest a vow unto God, defer not to pay it; for he hath no pleasure in fools: pay that which thou hast vowed.

Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay.

I Thessalonians 5:17

17 Pray without ceasing.

James 5:16

Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

BCUFam, when someone requests prayer, or when the Lord prompts us to intercede for someone, we may get caught up in the cares of the day and delay or even forget to take the request to the Lord. While our actions are not intentional, when we say we are going to do something, the Lord holds us to it, so with His help, we want to pray right away, even if we need to pray in our hearts—-God does hear us! Something else for us to consider——do we get caught up trying to get information about a situation rather than pray?

For example, on an extremely cold and icy morning, an ambulance showed up at my neighbor’s home. Unable to get outside, we looked out of the window for several minutes talking through scenarios as to what may have happened, and hoping to get a glance at who was in distress. As we continued looking out of the window for answers, the Lord reminded me that rather than talking and gawking, I should be praying for whoever was ailing—-and thank the Lord and I did just that! Thankfully, everything turned out fine for the neighbor, but the lesson is, that as people of God, we are intercessory first responders via prayer. Anytime an emergency situation arises, prayer should always be our first response. Amen? Amen. Let’s pray!

Father, in the name of Jesus, we thank and praise You for this day that You have made, and that we are rejoicing and glad in! Jesus, as we listened to what Your Word had to say to us, thank You for correcting and reminding us to be fervent and immediate in our prayers, rather than forgetting to or waiting for a particular time to pray. In fact, Luke 18:1 reminds us that we always ought to pray and not to faint. On that wise, we want to be in prayer in the morningbefore the busyness of the day, we want talk with You, Jesus throughout the day and evening—–acknowledging You in all our ways, so our paths will be directed. Please bless us to remember to intercede for others as You prompt us, so that Your will is accomplished in their lives. Thank You, Lord for blessing us to be better first responders in our prayer life and we will continue to bless and praise Your name, in Jesus Name we pray, Amen!

Letting Go and Trusting God (WHEW!)

  • With the new year, we often look back over the previous year to take account of what lessons we’ve learned.
  • At times, I’ve attended courses at “Experience University” (EU) enough to know NOT to repeat certain situations.
  • Recently, in sharing my EU insight with advice-seekers, the intent was they would follow the godly, sound council.
  • Sometimes, the hearer chooses a different path, and that’s where the lesson of letting go and trusting God comes in.

KJV Scripture references

Ecclesiastes 3:1

24 To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:

Proverbs 19:8

He that getteth wisdom loveth his own soul: he that keepeth understanding shall find good.

Luke 18:18-23

18 And a certain ruler asked him, saying, Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

19 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? none is good, save one, that is, God.

20 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother.

21 And he said, All these have I kept from my youth up.

22 Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.

23 And when he heard this, he was very sorrowful: for he was very rich.

Philippians 4:6-8

Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

Matthew 11:28-30

28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

BCUFam, when we are advising the people that God has assigned to us, it can be heart-wrenching when they do not heed the biblical and wise council we offer. While it is fine to be concerned, fretting, worrying, and being consumed with their decision is not of God. Rather, what we can and what we will do is take everything to the Lord in prayer…and we will pray in FAITH! Then, we will wait in faith and look for the Lord to speak to the person/situation, and turn things around His way and in His timing. It is not easy to let go and wait, but when God takes care of a matter, it is taken care of perfectly, because He is perfect. With the help of the Lord, let it go and trust God. Amen? Amen! Let’s pray!

Father, in the name of Jesus, we thank You for allowing us to hear Your voice through Your Word. We thank You for being here today and for the people You have placed in our lives that we care so deeply about. Lord, some of us have family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, loved ones, etc that are not making/have not made good choices, have not heeded wise and godly advice, have not secured their salvation—–whatever the situation is we are worried about. Rather than being anxious and fretful, we leave our emotions, cares and concerns at Your feet, Jesus! We want to exchange our heavy load for Your light load, as the book of Matthew 11:29-30 reminds us. We thank You for the exchange, and for giving us peace in our hearts and minds, Jesus, as You take care of the situation and us! In Jesus Name we pray, Amen!
